    Algebra I- Pat Reale

    Algebra I- Pat Reale

    This class is a study of the language, concepts, and techniques of algebra that will prepare students to approach and solve problems following a succession of steps. Skills taught in the course lay groundwork for upper-level math and science courses. Topics include linear functions, inequalities, data analysis, quadratic equations, absolute value, polynomials, and exponents.

    Algebra II- Pat Reale

    This course starts with a continuation of concepts studied in Algebra I. Students will develop advanced algebra skills such as systems of equations, polynomials, imaginary and complex numbers, quadratics, and include the study of trigonometric functions. In addition, they will be challenged by new concepts that require graphing skill, function analysis, solving higher order equations, investigating complex number systems, data analysis and probability.

    In art class we will tap into the wellspring of creativity of every student which will in turn enhance every aspect of their lives. Specifically, we will venture into the realm of painting, sculpture, graphic design, animation, performance art, drawing, architecture and many other mediums that will be instrumental to the success of our students in various subjects beyond art.

    This course examines the composition of various substances and the changes they can go through. It also shows you how chemistry touches our lives almost everywhere and everyday, in medicine, the clothes we wear, the games we play, as well as the industries that make the things we use. The periodic table and simple compounds are covered as well as the basics of Chemistry.

    In Driver’s Education, students will learn about the rules and regulations of the highway transportation system. Life experiences, DVD's, puzzles, and textbooks will be utilized throughout the school year.

    Room E1 consists of second and third graders. We foster a creative learning environment based on hands-on activities and creative play. Homework is assigned at parent request.

    E-2 is a self contained class of 3rd and 4th grade students. Within the classroom, the students have Reading, Language Arts/Grammar, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Multimedia, Health, French, and Financial Literacy. The students learn through hands-on experience and problem solving. They also participate in the Art and Music programs taught by our specialists. In addition, the students enjoy physical education activities at both the YMCA and the multi-purpose room here at school.

    American Literature is a sophomore class. We read various classic American novels, plays, and poetry as well as several short fiction and nonfiction stories. In addition, we also focus on the author’s life and the history behind the literature. Throughout the course, we will be writing several essays and/or PowerPoint presentations to help build upon students’ writing skills.

    British Literature is a junior class. We read various British novels, plays, poetry, and short stories spanning from The Anglo-Saxon period and the Middle Ages (449-1485) to Contemporary British Literature (1901-Present). As they read, students learn about the history of the time period as well as the author’s life. Throughout the course, students will write several essays and/or PowerPoint presentations to help build upon their writing skills.

    English IV (World Literature) is a senior class which focuses on the study of literature from around the world. This global perspective examines various works of fiction, nonfiction, drama, poetry, persuasive essays and humorous literature.

    Financial Literacy- English O’Connor

    This course provides students with the skills and concepts needed to gain personal and financial responsibility related to financial planning, savings and investments by exploring the relationship between income and careers, money management, credit and debt management, risk management and investing, protecting assets and insurance, taxes, and becoming a critical consumer.

    Forensic Science- Adel Khalaf

    Forensic science explores the application of basic biological, chemical and physical science principles and technological practices to the purposes of justice in the study of criminal and civil issues. Major themes of study in this course are pathology, anthropology, trace evidence, biological fluids, DNA, fingerprints, impression evidence, and crime scene handling.

MIR 1 focuses on connecting what students learn in the classroom to do what they will do in their lives after graduation.     Middle School (M1)- Jessi Knapp

    Room M1 is a seventh-grade class. Students study social studies (Geography), science (Life Science, Earth Science, Physics and Chemistry), language arts and math (individualized). Other classes include health, world language (Spanish) and specials (Art, Music, and Physical Education). We utilize many hands-on activities, Internet sites, textbooks, videos, and fieldtrips to create an interactive and exciting classroom experience.

    Middle School (M2)- Rich Verne

    M2 covers the various classes of the eighth-grade curriculum. We study the four branches of Earth Science in the 8th grade: geology, meteorology, oceanography and astronomy. In Social Studies, we study American government and the ideas behind our way of democracy. Language Arts includes reading (comprehension, vocabulary) and skills development. Mathematics is individualized to fit the students’ needs, as well as group activities that teach new skills. Other classes include health, world language (Spanish) and specials (Art, Music, and Phys. ed.).

    Music- Elaine Murray

    In music class we study concepts such as tempo (speed of music), dynamics (volume of music), tone color (unique sounds of instruments or voices), and many other musical concepts. We also play various musical games to make the concepts fun and interesting for the students. In addition to studying the aforementioned concepts, older students will also be given the opportunity to share their musical interests with the class by teaching the class about their favorite band or instrument.

    Students participate in various physical activities in a safe, fun and low-stress environment. Lessons presented throughout the year include basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, soccer and other similar activities.

    Physics – Adel Khalaf

    Introductory Physics is an introduction aimed to develop a basic grasp of scientific principles about the physical world. The course stresses experimental investigation, data collection and analysis through traditional or computer-based methods, critical thinking skills, and problem solving. Topics include classical mechanics, wave phenomena (light and sound), electricity, and magnetism. This section is focused on developing practical tools for scientific inquiry later in high school and beyond.

    This class is designed to build confidence and skills with money and spending. Topics include: covering your expenses, independent living, earning a paycheck and using cash and credit. Students will also learn how to comparison shop and budget their money.

    Pre-Calculus- Pat Reale

    This course is designed to cover topics in algebra ranging from advanced polynomials, rational, and exponential functions to conic sections. Applications of trigonometry concepts such as Law of Sines and Cosines will continue. Students will also begin analytic geometry and calculus concepts such as limits, derivatives, and integrals. Matrices and their properties along with discrete math are also included in this course.

    Spanish I – John J. Keane

    In Spanish class we will dive head first into the culture of the Latino population of this world, exploring their food, music, laws and various other customs that make them such a fascinating people. After immersing ourselves in their world we will learn the language of the Latinos, SPANISH! Through various fun and exciting visual, reading, listening exercises students will familiarize themselves with basics of the Spanish language and inherit valuable learning techniques that will make them succeed in any career they want to pursue in the future.

    This course begins with the year 1865. Students discover what happened during the period of reconstruction, the great immigration at the turn of the 20th century, the impact of manufacturing, the creation of unions, the rise of the women’s and civil rights movements, and the various wars and conflicts involving the United States. This course traces how the U.S. became a modern nation.

    World History is presented to students as an integrated study of the political, economical, and social aspects of history. Topics covered include pre-history, the Nile and the Fertile Crescent, the Indus Valley, China’s ancient civilizations, early American civilizations, Greece and Rome, the Middle Ages, the Crusades, African civilizations, East Asia, Renaissance and Reformation, the Global Age, Absolutism, Enlightenment and revolution, The Industrial Age, The Age of Revolutions, industrial nationalism and the New Imperialism.
