    Growing Up With Autism: Life Transitions

    The Weill Cornell Autism Research Program presents An Autism Symposium for Families and Professionals Transitions are often challenging for individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders.     Practical Math- Nancy McGovern

    We are currently working on the following material for the week of April 30th, 2012:

    Practical Math I and II

    Essential Questions: How do we keep up with basic skills?  How do we connect math to real-life situations?  How do we write decimals given the written form (i.e. three hundredths=.03)?  How do we use manipulatives to add with regrouping and to recognize place value of ones, tens and hundreds?  How do we use use manipulatives to show place value with decimals?  How do we compare decimals?  How do we line up decimals for adding and subtracting vertically?

    Materials needed:  Basic Essentials workbook, “Concepts of Fractions and Decimals” workbooks, flash cards, board games,  Resource Handbook- Increase Your Students’ Problem-Solving and Reasoning Skills – pictures and diagrams p. 23-27  Houghton Mifflin Mathematics text p. 130-145.

    Active Learning: Students will use manipulatives, Yaymath.com and Khanacademy.com for active learning.

    Practical Math III & IV

    Essential Questions: What are your needs/priorities?  How can you use smart shopping?  How can you determine how much you need i.e. materials- paint, flooring-area/perimeter. What is the difference between a consignment store and a thrift shop? What is a balanced diet?

    Materials needed: p. 208-225 Practical Mathematics for Consumers and reinforcements from workbook and teacher resource binder, internet-on-line sites for home shopping, print-outs for visuals, printer ink/paper

    Active Learning: Students will complete a project based on finding living décor as well as what they think they will need to live comfortably to suit their lifestyles. I would like to show them alternative ways to make purchases for better prices via consignment/thrift shop venues.

    Chapter 10 review and test will be given.
