The Weill Cornell Autism Research Program presents
An Autism Symposium for Families and Professionals
Transitions are often challenging for individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. This symposium will offer families and professionals the most up‐to‐date information on how to facilitate positive change in the lives of people with autism. Both day to day transitions as well as the broader life transitions which occur during childhood and young adulthood will be addressed. Included are panel discussions, breakout groups and an interactive tabling session with transition service providers at the disposal of attendees. The event is designed to provide an opportunity to learn from, ask questions of, and interact with the many experts on hand.

]]>Over the years, Dr. Jed Baker has become the “go to” specialist for understanding the social needs of children with difficulties managing social interactions and the intricacies of social awareness. likewise, Montgomery Academy has become the “go to” program to see theory in practice in the school setting. With a team of specialists, Montgomery Academy helps children develop social skills and manage emotion without the use of traditional behavior modification programs, which lack generalization of skills and often fail our children. We, at Montgomery Academy, are very pleased to be able to support our friend, Dr. Jed Baker, in the release of his newest work “No More Meltdowns”, and his upcoming series of workshops for parents and professionals. As a very generous gesture in reciprocating this relationship, Dr. Baker has offered a deep discount on the cost of attending his Livingston workshop on April 27th, 2012, for all of Montgomery Academy’s friends and families.

]]>MONTGOMERY STUDENT FINDS HER VOICE!
Like so many children with special needs, Elizabeth found her voice through the arts. In Elizabeth’s case it was through the art of writing poetry. We at Montgomery Academy have seen this so many times in so many different ways. Many of our children participate in performing, musical and visual arts. That is why the arts are so important here. Some students find confidence, some social acceptance, some self identity, some find a strategy to manage difficulties and stress, and some students even find their voice.
Elizabeth’s very special talent has allowed her to find her voice and to communicate who she really is behind the veil of autism. Along with her mother, Virginia, Elizabeth has published a book filled with her poems and an inside look at her very inspiring journey.
Elizabeth is just one of the many incredibly wonderful and talented children that we have here at Montgomery Academy. We are so proud of all of them! But what
Elizabeth has done with her poetry, her spirit, and her book is to provide insight of just how “special”, these special children really are.
You can learn more about Elizabeth and her journey by visiting PBS online and searching “autistic poet”.
