Healthy children are more successful learners. The School Health Nurse has a multifaceted role within the school setting at Montgomery Academy, one that supports the physical, mental, emotional and social health of students and their success in the learning process. The certified School Health Nurse oversees school health policies and programs while serving a pivotal role in providing expertise and oversight for provisions of school health services as outlined by the New Jersey Department of Education. Using clinical knowledge and judgment, the School Health Nurse provides healthcare guidance to students and staff, performs health screenings and provides current educational health material to students and staff. The School Health Nurse also serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the student and to provide a healthy school environment.
In addition, the School Health Nurse functions under the guidance of the school medical advisor, Dr. Gerald Casale M.D. Parents are encouraged to contact the School Health Nurse with any concerns they have regarding the health and wellbeing of their child at (908) 766-0362 x 134. – Kathy Appis RN, NJ Certified School Health Nurse
